I Don’t Want to Lose!
Written by Ryu Hoseon, Illustrated by Park Jeongseop
Tori doesn’t like his classmate Yuan, who always brags about being first in the class. He is tired of losing to him over and over again. One day, in a dream, Tori sees a red candy and a blue candy. If he ate the red candy, he would win everything. What should he choose? This book doesn’t just tell you that it’s okay to lose. Instead, it focuses on how boring it is to win all the time, and helps you realize the joy and value of losing.

Synopsis
“I won. I’m first!” exclaims Yuan, who enters the classroom faster than Tori. As the class does origami, Yuan shouts that he finished first. Tori remembers his grandmother’s words that it’s more important to do a good job than to do it quickly, so he folds the colored paper carefully. However, Yuan sees Tori and teases him for finishing last. Tori doesn’t mind winning or losing, but he begins to hate losing because Yuan shouts for first place all day. After losing the Jenga game, losing the relay race, and even losing at putting on his shoes, Tori feels like a useless person and sobs. That night, his deceased grandmother appears in his dream and offers him a red candy and a blue candy. She tells Tori that if he eats the red candy, he will always win. Tori eats the red candy before he listens to the explanation about the blue candy.
The next day, Tori wins first place in everything he does, whether it’s running in gym class or playing games at recess. But he wins so fast that he has to wait for the other kids to finish. Tori’s classmates don’t play with him because they think it’s not fun because he only wins. Tori feels like he is being punished instead of rewarded. There is only one thing left to do. In his dream, Tori sees his grandmother again and asks for a blue candy. The blue candy was the candy he could lose. After eating the blue candy, Tori runs to the track meet. Tori loses to Yuan by a narrow margin, but he feels good about his defeat. Tori and Yuan rub shoulders and go back to the classroom.
