Tamna Sunryeokdo: 1702, Traveling Around Jeju
Written by Yoon Min-yong · Illustrated by Shashamiu
About 300 years ago, in 1702, Lee Hyeongsang was appointed as the governor of Jeju and toured the entire island. He spent a busy year inspecting military forces and supplies, preparing tribute oranges and horses, examining the diving activities of the haenyeo and Jeju’s indigenous beliefs, holding civil service examinations, and hosting feasts for the elderly. The result of that journey is the Tamna Sunryeokdo. This is a ‘historical picture book based on historical records,’ newly structured to meet the perspective of today’s readers. It selects 20 key original illustrations and weaves them together in chronological order. The illustrator combines the texture of ink wash painting with modern color palettes to recreate distinctive objects and tools of daily life from the originals, including the Jeju Mok government office, which was not depicted in the originals.
